#1. What are KPI’s and how do they improve operations?

Key Production Initiatives are given out to encourage workers and supervisors to work more efficient to improve profits for the company.

Knowledge & Performance Instruction manuals are used to train and educate workers in their positions.

Key Performance Indicators are a way to collect data and measure the success of an organization, employee, or rig site in meeting objectives for safety, performance, schedules and budgets.

#2. What is an ERP or Safety Response Plan and what information should you be able to find on the document?

The Name and Number of the rig, a phone list of emergency contacts, contact information of the Primary operator (oil Company), The directions to the location, initial rescue operations and muster areas.

Environmental instructions for spills, Evacuation instructions, poison control if chemicals are ingested by a person.

How to secure the area, Hospital, ambulance, Police and fire contact numbers. OHSA or OH&S contact information.

#3. What are the zones for DROPPED Objects?

Crown, monkeyboard, monkeyboard to rig floor, rig floor and roof tops to ground, Elevated work platforms to ground, ground to bottom of cellar.

Crown sheeve area, Crown to racking area, travelling equipment such as blocks and Topdrive, racking area to rig floor, rig floor to ground.

#4. What can happen to a Drill pipe thread connection if the Manufacturers torque specs are not achieved when making up?

The Manufacturers torque specifications are a recommended torque but can not always be achieved if the rig equipment can not torque high enough.

Anything over 25,000ft/lbs is the minimum requirement.

If the optimum torque is not achieved, the connections can over-torque down hole from reactive torque, directional motor stalling, stick and slip, jarring with torque applied to the drill string, and when drilling through aggressive formations were high torque downhole is observed.

Connections can back out when tripping in the hole and drilling.

Connections should not be torqued to the recommended torque value because it wears out the threads and becomes difficult to break the connections when tripping out of the hole.

#7. When conducting a pressure test on the BOP, surface lines, choke Safety valve and the inside BOP, how should pressure be applied to ensure a competent test is completed as per API standard?

Pressure should be applied from the direction of flow from the wellbore.

Pressure should be applied from a side entry sub with a Safety valve on top and down through a ported test plug.

Pressure should be applied from the choke manifold to test the choke, HCR, BOP RAMs and Annular element.

Pressure should be applied from the mud pump manifold to the BOP through the kill line.

#8. When setting up pipe racks at the catwalk, what checks should be made before pipe is set on them?

Racks should be chained to the catwalk, evenly levelled to ensure pipe can not roll without assistance and rags or rope are available to prevent the pipe from rolling off.

Make sure the pins have been removed so pipe can easily be rolled off the racks and onto the catwalk.

Racks should be chained to the catwalk and raised on the outer end, so pipe rolls in towards the catwalk.

Racks should be chained to the catwalk, evenly levelled to ensure pipe can not roll without assistance, and pins are up on both ends to prevent pipe from rolling off.

#9. When completing an integrity test of the formation after drilling out the casing shoe, what is the difference between a FIT test (formation integrity test) and a LOT test (leak-off test)?

A FIT or formation integrity test can be defined as the application of pressure applied at surface on the fluid in the wellbore to determine what the formation can withstand based on a calculated certain hydrostatic pressure. A leak off test is the same application of pressure applied until the formation breaks down and pressure can be observed leaking off.

Each test is the same, just different terminology based on different geographical drilling locations.
